Project Overview

After Tacet, Axis Lighting came back to us with a bigger challenge: StencilFlex, a modular framework system of rails, hubs, and interchangeable inserts with thousands of possible combinations. The StencilFlex Builder is the result — a browser-based canvas where specifiers draw a framework, drop in hubs and inserts, and walk away with a bill of materials and a quote request in minutes.

The Challenge

StencilFlex isn't a fixture you pick from a list — it's a system you compose. Rails from two to eight feet, corner and inline hubs, three mounting types, direct and track-mounted inserts, each with its own compatibility rules. Specifying a layout by hand meant sketches, spreadsheets, and long email threads with a rep.

The goal was to turn all of that into a single drawing surface that quietly enforces the engineering rules.

Our Approach

We designed a CAD-like canvas that feels like a sketching tool: drag pieces from a palette, or draw freehand and watch strokes snap into rails and corners become hubs. Live run stats, a pre-flight checklist that validates every joint and socket before finishing, and starter templates keep first-time users on the rails — literally. Every design compiles into a shareable link, a PDF, and a bill of materials that lands directly in the Axis quotes inbox.

The Result

A second configurator in the Axis Studio family — one that turns a modular product with thousands of combinations into something a specifier can design, validate, and send for quote in one sitting, no back-and-forth required. Every submission arrives at Axis as a finished package: design snapshot, bill of materials, PDF, and a link that reopens the exact layout.
